Traditional acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine practiced in China and the Far East for thousands of years. It is a form of treatment which aims to resolve health problems by treating the underlying cause. Beneficial to numerous conditions, acupuncture works to restore equilibrium on a physical, mental and spiritual level by balancing the flow of energy or Qi within the body. Health problems and their symptoms are seen as a result of an upset in this flow of energy.
Your initial treatment begins with a discussion of your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle habits - such as diet, fluid intake and sleeping patterns. I will also take your pulses (in both wrists) and examine your tongue. This information allows me to build up a picture of your overall health and decide upon the most effective treatment plan for you. This initial appointment is usually around 90 minutes, with subsequent visits lasting for approximately 60 minutes.
The acupuncture treatment usually involves the insertion of very fine, single use, sterile acupuncture needles into particular areas or acupuncture points on the body. The needles may be removed immediately or remain in place for a short time. I may also warm parts of the skin using a therapeutic herb called moxa or may apply glass cups to the skin to remove stagnation and encourage blood flow to the area.
The number of treatments required varies according to the underlying condition and how quickly you respond to treatment. Initially, I will usually ask to see you once a week, with treatments becoming more infrequent as your treatment progresses. An improvement in your condition is typically experienced within 4-6 treatments, and many people choose to continue periodically to maintain their health.
